3I/ATLAS Mystery Deepens: Harvard Scientist's New Theory (2026)

Is 3I/ATLAS Hiding Something?

It seems we might be looking at more than just a comet! Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb suggests that the anti-tail of comet 3I/ATLAS could be surrounded by a swarm of objects. But what does this mean, and why is it causing such a stir?

In a recent blog post, Loeb, known for his intriguing theories, pointed out that images taken after 3I/ATLAS passed closest to the sun showed a teardrop-shaped coma, with an extension pointing towards the sun. This is unusual, and it's got scientists talking.

Loeb believes that the comet's movement away from the sun is due to something called non-gravitational acceleration. This means something other than gravity is pushing it. He estimates that these mysterious objects could be as close as 54,000 kilometers to the sun compared to 3I/ATLAS. That's a pretty significant difference!

What's the Big Deal?

If these objects continue to experience this non-gravitational acceleration, they should maintain their current anti-tail formation. Loeb also notes that a large swarm of objects would have a much greater surface area than 3I/ATLAS itself, even if their total mass is relatively small.

The Upcoming Jupiter Encounter

3I/ATLAS is expected to make its closest approach to Jupiter on March 16, 2026, as it exits our solar system. At that point, it will be approximately 33 million miles from Jupiter, a much closer distance than the 170 million miles it will be from Earth on December 19th. Loeb speculates that this positioning could be strategic, suggesting that the comet might be in a prime location to deploy something near Jupiter.

But here's where it gets controversial... Loeb has previously suggested that 3I/ATLAS could be an alien vessel. Could this swarm of objects be related? Is this just a natural phenomenon, or something more?
