The high street in the UK faced a heartbreaking transformation in 2025, with several well-known retail names vanishing or drastically reducing their presence. This trend has left many communities without familiar shopping options and resulted in job losses for hundreds of dedicated employees.
To put things into perspective, the numbers are staggering. In 2024 alone, approximately 37 shops closed every single day, amounting to nearly 13,500 retail establishments disappearing from the landscape, as reported by the Centre for Retail Research. Unfortunately, this downward trend continued into 2025.
WHSmith, a name synonymous with stationery and books, chose to pivot away from traditional high street locations to concentrate on travel hubs instead. This major change marked a significant shift for a brand that had been a staple for generations. In a surprising turn of events, the company sold its remaining shops to Modella Capital, which owns Hobbycraft, and these locations have since been rebranded as TG Jones stores. While WHSmith has diminished its high street footprint, it still operates in airports, train stations, and hospitals, allowing customers to hold onto a piece of nostalgia amidst the changes.
Another beloved retailer, Homebase, known for DIY and gardening supplies since the 1980s, also faced tough times. Once celebrated as the second-largest home improvement chain in the UK and Ireland, Homebase had to shut down 65 stores after going into administration. Fortunately, new owners managed to keep around 70 locations open, although plans were set to transition many physical shops into The Range outlets. Other companies like B&Q and Sainsbury's also swooped in to acquire specific Homebase stores, further reshaping the retail landscape.
The clothing retailer Quiz, which debuted in Glasgow in 1993 and expanded to over 60 stores, found itself in dire straits by early 2025. A restructuring process was initiated, putting 23 stores at risk of closure amid ongoing financial struggles. Following these challenges, Quiz's shares were removed from the London Stock Exchange. The company's chief executive, Sheraz Ramzan, expressed regret over the store closures but emphasized that these measures were necessary to ensure the business could continue and protect hundreds of jobs, as Orion Retail stepped in to rescue the remaining stores.
Though not entirely out of the picture, Claire's—a favorite destination for jewelry and ear piercing—entered administration early in 2025. Modella Capital initially agreed to acquire 156 of its stores in the UK and Ireland; however, 145 locations were ultimately closed, leading to the loss of 1,000 jobs. Just recently, Modella announced its own insolvency proceedings due to challenging trading conditions and disappointing holiday sales, raising questions about the future of Claire's and the Original Factory Shop.
