The story begins with a 55-year-old swimmer, Erica Fox, who vanished after a reported shark attack. Despite the official search being called off, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office dive team, with the help of Bedrock Ocean Exploration, embarked on an additional search mission.
Using advanced technology, they mapped the sea floor with side-scan sonar, covering a substantial area in their quest to find Erica. However, the search proved fruitless, and with stormy weather looming, further efforts were suspended.
Fox was part of the Kelp Krawlers, a weekly swimming group. On that fateful day, they entered the water as usual, but a witness on the shore reported a large splash, prompting concern of a potential shark attack. All swimmers returned safely, except for Erica.
Two witnesses claimed Fox may have encountered a shark while swimming offshore. The U.S. Coast Guard received the first report from a driver at a stop sign, who described seeing a shark breach with what appeared to be a human body in its jaws. A second witness, one of the swimmers, realized Fox was missing after taking a headcount.
The search was officially suspended on Monday afternoon after an extensive 15-hour operation covering over 84 square nautical miles. Captain Jordan Baldueza of the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco expressed condolences to those affected by this tragedy.
Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey Fire Department, Seaside Fire, and CAL FIRE, joined the response, utilizing rescue boats, drones, and helicopters to scour the water and surrounding areas.
