In an important development, a White House envoy revealed on Sunday that he had engaged in "productive and constructive" discussions in Florida with representatives from Ukraine and Europe aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing war that has persisted for nearly four years between Russia and Ukraine.
Steve Witkoff shared on social media that these discussions were focused on creating a unified strategic approach between Ukraine, the United States, and European nations. He emphasized, "Our foremost goal is to put an end to the violence, guarantee safety, and establish the necessary conditions for Ukraine's recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity. Achieving peace involves not just halting hostilities but also laying down a dignified foundation for a stable future."
These talks are part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration, which has been actively seeking a resolution to the conflict. The U.S. president has been driving a comprehensive diplomatic effort to facilitate peace negotiations; however, these efforts have faced significant obstacles due to the starkly opposing demands from both Moscow and Kyiv. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated a firm stance on his maximalist demands regarding Ukraine, even as Russian troops continue to advance on the battlefield, facing substantial casualties along the way.
Witkoff's remarks come amid ongoing negotiations with Russian officials. A Kremlin representative stated on Saturday that discussions were continuing in a "constructive" manner in Florida. Kirill Dmitriev mentioned to reporters in Miami, "The discussions are progressing constructively. They started earlier and will carry on today and tomorrow." However, there were no immediate updates on the talks with Russia available on Sunday.
Dmitriev met with Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who is Trump's son-in-law, as reported by the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed on Telegram that diplomatic initiatives were advancing rapidly, noting that Ukraine's team was collaborating closely with the American side in Florida.
However, the Kremlin denied on Sunday that any trilateral discussions involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States were being considered, despite Zelenskyy’s statement on Saturday suggesting that Washington had proposed such talks. Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to Putin on foreign affairs, clarified, "Currently, no serious discussions about this initiative are taking place, and to my knowledge, it is not being prepared."
