Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy describes recovery from broken jaw
Charlie McAvoy is blending up a storm at home, but not in the way you might expect. While milkshakes and protein smoothies are his go-to drinks during his recovery from a broken jaw, solid foods are a no-go zone.
"It's tough, I tried blending chicken and vegetables, but that was a disaster. It's just not meant to be eaten that way," McAvoy said with a smile, his first public comments since a slap shot to the face in Montreal on November 15. "I knew immediately I was in some trouble. We had a linear fracture all the way down my jaw, and some displacement, which caused me to lose a lot of teeth."
Doctors have advised McAvoy that solid food will be back on the menu in six weeks, which means he's about three weeks away from his return. In the meantime, he's been practicing with the Bruins, looking active and engaged despite losing nearly 20 pounds.
"I've got to get my strength back," he said. "It's tough, with the lost weight. I feel weak and it's hard to find energy. I lost close to 20 pounds in the first week and a half. It's a shock to your body, and then trying to get it back while getting out there and doing more than I've done in a while, we're trying to play catch-up."
McAvoy's recovery journey is a testament to his determination, and he's eager to get back on the ice. Fans can follow his progress and support him as he works towards a full recovery.
