Canada's Women's Hockey Team Loses to the United States: A Dominance Continues
The Canadian women's hockey team suffered a lopsided 5-0 defeat to the United States at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, extending their winless streak against Team USA to over a year. This loss marks the second time Canada has dropped a game in the preliminary round of the Olympics, with the last loss also to the Americans in 1998.
The U.S. team showcased their prowess with three assists from Abbey Murphy and two goals by Hannah Bilka. Caroline Harvey opened the scoring early and added two more assists by the end of the game. This victory extends their winning streak against Canada to seven consecutive games at the senior national level, including two at the 2025 World Championships and the 2025 Rivalry Series.
Aerin Frankel secured her second Olympic shutout, and Kirsten Simms scored for the U.S. after a goaltender interference review and a failed coach's challenge by Canada. Laila Edwards scored the fifth goal, becoming the first Black woman to score for Team USA at the Olympics.
Canada's Ann-Renee Desbiens was replaced by Emerance Maschmeyer in the third period after allowing five goals. Captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who has been listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, missed the game.
The loss highlights the ongoing challenge for Canada in their pursuit of a win against the U.S. women's hockey team. The team will now face Finland in their final game of the preliminary round on Thursday.
