But here's where it gets controversial... Macleod's initial idea was to send a character on a holiday across the Pennines, but he decided to go big. Really big. And so, in a dark and mysterious location between Manchester and West Yorkshire, the unthinkable happens. Characters from both soaps find themselves in a high-speed encounter, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
Macleod describes it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for soap fans. "It's so exciting!" he exclaims. And he's right; this is a chance to see your favorite characters from both shows interact and create new, unexpected storylines.
The meeting of these TV tribes had to be on neutral ground, and Macleod drew inspiration from his own commute between Manchester and Leeds. He jokes about his loathing for the journey, which is often plagued by delays and accidents. It's a creative twist on a real-life challenge, and it adds an extra layer of intrigue to the episode.
For the actors, this special was a unique opportunity to bond and get to know their counterparts. Joe-Warren Plant, who plays Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale, describes the experience as intense yet fun. "There was a bit of friendly rivalry," he says, "but once we were on set, it all melted away. Everyone from Corrie was incredibly welcoming."
The all-action episode required an incredible 14 all-night filming sessions, but the cast and crew made the most of it. Julia Goulding, who plays the pregnant Shona Platt in Coronation Street, insists it was a pleasant experience despite the long hours. "It was a great team effort," she says. "Spending time with the Emmerdale crew was a highlight."
And this is the part most people miss... a few actors have actually crossed over between the two soaps. Chris Bisson, who played Vikram Desai in Coronation Street and has been Jai Sharma in Emmerdale since 2009, faced a unique challenge. "I was thrilled to be part of this," he says. "It was a bit of an issue, but I wanted the viewers to see Steve McDonald think he saw Vikram!"
After Corriedale, the soaps will go their separate ways again, but ITV has a new plan. They're calling it a "soap power hour," with Emmerdale at 8 pm followed by Corrie at 8:30 pm every weeknight. This new routine, according to Bisson, is a step towards telling stories the way they used to.
But there's a catch. The shows are facing declining ratings, and Corriedale is an attempt to boost viewership. According to the Sun's soaps editor, Carl Greenwood, the soaps have lost millions of viewers over the years. Corrie and Emmerdale are now being scaled back for the first time, with a total of five hours of airtime per week instead of six.
Greenwood believes it was inevitable due to the decline in viewers. "It's a difficult time for soaps," he says. "But I don't think they're going anywhere. We'll just see less of them."
The reduced airtime is a strategic move, according to Macleod. Half-hour episodes are more reliable and consumable, and it allows for a faster-paced storytelling style. However, budgets have been cut, and over 70 staff and crew jobs have been lost.
