A major setback for the Detroit Lions' playoff aspirations: Frank Ragnow, the retired Pro Bowl center, won't be rejoining the team due to a failed physical. This news is a blow to the Lions' offensive line, which was hoping for a boost during the crucial playoff push.
Ragnow, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, had planned to come out of retirement and suit up for the Lions starting in Week 14. However, upon reporting to the team on Friday, he underwent a physical examination, and the results were not favorable. The Lions' medical team discovered a Grade 3 hamstring strain, which would have kept him sidelined for the remainder of the regular season.
"Frank Ragnow reported to our facility, and during a routine meeting with our medical staff, he unfortunately failed his physical," the team stated.
The Lions have had a solid offensive showing this season, but their line's interior has been a weakness. They rank second in the NFL in rushing yards and yards per carry, but their ground game has been inconsistent. They've relied heavily on Jahmyr Gibbs for explosive plays, rather than consistent, successful runs.
Additionally, they've faced increased pressure up the middle, with Jared Goff being sacked 26 times this season. The absence of Ben Johnson, now the coach of the Chicago Bears, has also impacted the team's offensive sharpness.
Ragnow, a first-round pick in 2018, retired in June at the age of 29, citing concerns for his future health. Before his retirement, he started all 96 games he played from 2018 to 2024. His return would have provided a significant boost to the offensive front, but his hamstring injury prevents him from rejoining the team.
"Frank has always put the team first and is a true warrior," the Lions said. "He will always be a Lion."
Now, the Lions must find a way to assemble a functional offensive line without Ragnow's Pro Bowl-level talent and make a strong push in December to secure a postseason berth. A challenging task lies ahead, but the Lions are determined to overcome this setback and fight for their playoff dreams.
