Macron Responds to Trump: EU Stands Firm on Greenland Amid Tariff Threats (2026)

Emmanuel Macron has strongly responded to Donald Trump's recent threats aimed at imposing tariffs on countries that oppose his controversial plans for Greenland. The French president asserted that "no amount of intimidation" will sway European nations from their stance regarding Greenland.

On Saturday, Trump announced a 10% tariff on eight European countries, effective February 1, which would escalate to a 25% tariff on June 1. This bold move has sparked significant backlash from European leaders.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson echoed Macron's sentiment, declaring that the EU would not be subjected to "blackmail" by the US president. Similarly, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized that "threats have no place among allies." In a joint statement, EU leaders highlighted that tariffs could weaken transatlantic relations and trigger a dangerous downward spiral in diplomatic ties. An emergency meeting of EU ambassadors is anticipated on Sunday to address this escalating situation.

Trump's aggressive rhetoric seems to have invigorated the EU, which had previously been hesitant to adopt a confrontational stance. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have even suggested halting the ratification process of the US trade deal scheduled for next week. Manfred Weber, leader of the European People's Party— the largest voting bloc in the EU— indicated that they may need to pause the legal approval process entirely.

The tariffs target Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland—countries that have vocally opposed Trump's aspirations for Greenland. While European leaders were in Paraguay signing a historic trade agreement with the Mercosur alliance of South American nations, they were caught off guard by Trump's latest social media remarks.

Trump stated, "This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland." Macron wasted no time in condemning these tariff threats as "unacceptable," asserting that such tactics have no place when Europe is standing firm in its support of Greenland, especially given that Denmark is both an EU and NATO member, along with being a signatory of the UN charter that upholds international law.

Macron elaborated, "France stands committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations, both within Europe and beyond. This principle informs our decisions and reinforces our dedication to the United Nations and its charter." He added that France’s support for Ukraine and its participation in security exercises in Greenland are part of its broader commitment to defend these principles and ensure security in the Arctic region and across Europe’s borders.

"No threats or intimidation will deter us, whether it concerns Ukraine, Greenland, or any other global issues we face," Macron concluded.

In a similar tone, Kristersson emphasized that the decision-making concerning Denmark and Greenland rests solely with those nations, stating, "We will not allow ourselves to be blackmailed. I will always advocate for my country and our allied neighbors."

European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated in their joint statement that they have consistently highlighted the shared transatlantic interest in maintaining peace and security in the Arctic, particularly through NATO collaboration. They maintained that constructive dialogue is crucial, adding that tariffs would jeopardize transatlantic relations and lead to a precarious downward spiral. "Europe will remain united, coordinated, and dedicated to upholding its sovereignty," they affirmed.

Attempting to de-escalate the situation, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen referred to "constructive" discussions he held with Marco Rubio last week, acknowledging the need for enhanced security in the Arctic. “That is why we and our NATO partners are collaborating transparently with our American allies,” he noted.

Experts have described Trump’s threat of additional tariffs as a "negotiating tactic." Mikkel Runge Olesen, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, pointed out that the tariffs appear to correlate with the European troops deployed to Greenland. "We are unlikely to see American troops on the ground in Greenland; this is merely a tactic in negotiations," he remarked during an interview with Sky News.

The EU-US tariff agreement was initially established last August at Trump’s golf resort in Scotland but has yet to receive ratification from the European Parliament. German MEP Bernd Lange, who chairs the trade parliamentary committee, expressed that he anticipates a halt in the ratification process. "Given the threat of an additional 10% tariff starting February 1, it’s hard to envision us continuing with business as usual; I expect we will suspend all ongoing efforts," he stated.

Lange also mentioned that while the European People's Party supports the EU-US trade deal, approval cannot proceed under the current circumstances surrounding Trump's Greenland threats. "We must put the 0% tariffs on US products on hold," he insisted. This sentiment was echoed by the Socialists and Democrats, the second-largest voting bloc, as Vice-President for Trade Kathleen Van Brempt declared that no trade deal could be negotiated under the current conditions.
