Oregon’s victory over USC wasn’t just another notch in their belt; it transformed the playoff conversation. With an impressive 10–1 overall record (7–1 in Big Ten play), the Ducks climbed to No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings — up one spot from last week’s No. 7. Their opponent, USC, previously ranked No. 15, tumbled to No. 17 after the loss.
That single shift, however, sparked debate. Oregon traded places with Ole Miss, which didn’t play last week due to its second bye. Head coach Dan Lanning recently made headlines endorsing Oregon’s defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi for Cal’s head coaching vacancy, signaling the program’s growing influence within college football’s coaching circles.
Oregon’s only blemish this season remains a loss to Indiana, which still holds the No. 2 spot nationally. Yet, the Ducks have maintained consistency few programs can match: 15 consecutive CFP top-10 appearances since 2023 and 28 straight placements in the top 25 going back to 2020. That kind of sustained excellence puts them squarely in the playoff conversation every year — but does one marquee win truly justify jumping other teams that have stayed steady?
