Get ready, car enthusiasts! Perodua is gearing up to launch its next big thing, and it's generating serious buzz. We're talking about the highly anticipated B-segment crossover, codenamed D66B, and it's set to shake up the market.
Perodua recently teased this new model on social media, but the details are still under wraps. However, we can make an educated guess that this is the brand's much-awaited B-segment crossover codenamed D66B.
This new vehicle is expected to share a lot of its DNA with the Toyota Yaris Cross, which already boasts a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. The Yaris Cross is already being produced in Malaysia, so it makes sense that the Perodua version, potentially called the Nexis or Traz, will follow suit. Trademark filings from over three years ago hint at these names, adding to the excitement.
But here's where it gets interesting: the D66B Nexis/Traz won't be a carbon copy of its Toyota sibling. Perodua is giving it its own unique spin, starting with a distinct front grille design. The teaser video gives us a glimpse of L-shaped motifs, a clear departure from the Yaris Cross's U-shaped design.
And this is the part most people miss... the subtle design cues that will differentiate the two models. Even in a heavily darkened wide shot, the D66B reveals design elements seen on the Yaris Cross, such as the sleek headlamps and chrome trim near the C-pillars. Digital renderings from experts like Theophilus Chin give us a sneak peek at what to expect.
What about the engine? The Indonesian version of the Yaris Cross offers a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine. However, the Thai version goes hybrid-only, combining a 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor.
The original launch date was slated for April 2024, but the focus shifted to the Q-VE, which has caused a delay. The D66B will be positioned above the Ativa in Perodua's lineup, which currently starts at RM62,500. So, what price tag do you think the D66B will carry?
