A concerning economic shift has taken place in Region 12, with export receipts dropping significantly in the second quarter of 2025. The region's exports, valued at $308.7 million, represent a substantial decline from the previous year's figures. But here's where it gets controversial: the primary culprit for this downturn is the drop in crude coconut oil production, which has been impacted by supply constraints due to the El Niño phenomenon.
Despite this setback, Region 12's top export products remain diverse and promising. Crude coconut oil, with a value of $70.8 million, leads the way, followed by canned tuna, pineapple juice, and crude palm oil. Interestingly, fresh pineapple juice and crude palm oil experienced the most growth, indicating a potential shift in market demand.
Region 12 encompasses the provinces of South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, as well as the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, and Kidapawan. The region's economic report, released by DEPDev Region 12 in October, provides valuable insights into its trade dynamics.
Canned tuna, a staple export, also demonstrated resilience, with solid gains amidst the challenges posed by U.S. tariff uncertainties. On the import side, Region 12 sourced products worth P2.1 billion during the second quarter. Malaysia remained the top supplier, while China's shipments nearly doubled in value.
The import structure of Region 12 highlights a rising demand for energy, construction, and agro-processing. This shift is evident in the top imported products, which include oil, rice, iron and steel, and mineral products.
And this is the part most people miss: the impact of natural phenomena on economic activities. The El Niño phenomenon's influence on crude coconut oil production serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and trade.
So, what do you think? Is Region 12's economic future tied to the unpredictable forces of nature? Or can they adapt and thrive despite these challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments!
