The Kansas City Royals are keen to maintain their partnership with FanDuel Sports Kansas City, but they have one crucial stipulation.
In a landscape where broadcasting agreements can quickly shift, the Royals are committed to staying connected to their audience through FanDuel Sports KC, provided that there are no interruptions during the upcoming season. Cullen Maxey, the Royals' president of business operations, recently highlighted the importance of this condition. "Our aim is to continue collaborating with our partners, as long as they can assure us there won't be any disruptions while we bring our games to the fans during the season. That’s our top priority," Maxey stated. He acknowledged the positive impact FanDuel has had in expanding the team's reach within their broadcast territory and praised the successful launch of their direct-to-consumer product, which has been well received as viewer habits evolve.
However, if FanDuel were unable to provide that assurance, the Royals may find themselves in a position similar to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who faced financial challenges last year that led Major League Baseball (MLB) to take over their broadcasts mid-season. Maxey expressed his desire to avoid such an abrupt shift, saying, "I don’t want to go through what we experienced in Arizona." He emphasized that a decision about their broadcasting future would be made soon, before spring training, which begins on February 10.
Currently, the situation is precarious for Main Street Sports Group, the parent company of FanDuel Sports Network. Reports indicate that unless they can negotiate a merger with DAZN, the company could face bankruptcy within weeks. The Royals, among nine MLB teams that have already terminated their broadcasting agreements with Main Street Sports, are eager to finalize a restructured deal that keeps their games on FanDuel Sports KC.
Interestingly, sources from the Sports Business Journal revealed that these nine teams—including the Cardinals, Tigers, Rays, Angels, Braves, Reds, Marlins, and Brewers—are unlikely to return to Main Street Sports Group. This raises concerns about the viability of Main Street's potential merger with DAZN and casts doubt on the future of their broadcasting deals.
For Royals fans, should MLB take over the broadcasts, the viewing experience will remain the same; fans would still have access to watch games via cable or streaming services. However, the organization is currently focusing on ensuring stability in their broadcasting arrangement, avoiding the chaos that can arise from sudden changes. As they move forward, the Royals are hopeful for a smooth sailing season, but the clock is ticking, and decisions need to be made soon.
