The Western Michigan University men's soccer team's 2025 season came to a close on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to the 16-seed Furman Paladins. The Broncos fought valiantly for 90 minutes at Stone Soccer Stadium, but couldn't find the equalizer to advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. Seven players recorded shots, with graduate defender Mathieu Beauvain's shot being the lone shot on goal. Other notable players included junior defender Braxton Arpachinda, redshirt senior Roni Sylejmani, junior forward Henrik Boer, senior forward Jonathan Stout, sophomore midfielder Gabe Villagomez, and sophomore midfielder Braden Stevanovic. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Lindewirth made four saves on difficult Furman shots while only allowing a goal. The game started with both teams on the offensive, with WMU recording the first chance in the second minute. Lindewirth made a highlight save in the eighth minute, leaping to the left side of the net after the Paladins got a chance off a fast throw in. Seven minutes later, Western Michigan had one of its best chances of the match with Beauvain receiving a service just outside the six. The defender lept up, directing the ball up towards the net, forcing a diving save from Furman's goalkeeper. Beauvain's shot was rewarded with a corner kick, but the Broncos weren't able to connect on the set piece as the Paladins moved the ball the other way. Lindewirth made his second save of the afternoon in the 17th minute before WMU got the ball back into its offensive third. The Brown and Gold only recorded one more shot in the first half of the match in the 40th minute as Villagomez strike from the left side of the 10 was blocked by a running Furman player. In the final two minutes of the half, the Paladins scored the lone goal of the match, putting Western Michigan down by one going into the locker room. The Bronco offense came back in a force to start the second 45. WMU controlled the pace of play in its own attacking third, recording another blocked shot in the 55th minute. Furman's defense was able to move the ball up the field to its attacking third, but the Brown and Gold defense stood strong blocking a shot and recording two saves in an eight-minute stretch. Western Michigan's best opportunity of the second half happened in the 69th minute on a free kick set piece. At the edge of the offensive third, Arpachinda sent the ball straight down the middle, hitting the top of the Paladin's wall for a block. The Broncos had two quick shots after the block thanks to another Furman foul. Beauvain had a quick touch in front of the goal area that was blocked away to a throw in. While Sylejmani had a header off a throw in that went high over the crossbar. WMU continued to run into the Paladins effective defensive positioning, not getting another opportunity until the 82nd minute. A deep throw in put the ball at Stout's feet to the right side of the penalty arc. Stout shot the ball with his right foot, sending it over the net and to the right. The Brown and Gold weren't able to get another shot off in the final seven minutes of the match as Furman took the 1-0 victory on its home field. Western Michigan ends the 2025 season with a 8-10-4 record with a 3-1-1 postseason performance. The Broncos graduate 13 players after 2025, including goalkeepers Noah Dietrich and Timi Adams, midfielder Giuseppe Santacroce, Beauvain, Sylejmani, midfielder Juan Romero, forward Connor Burkett, defender Duarte Chapelas, forward Piero Sabroso, midfielder Ronan Wilcox, Stout, and defender Emiel Nieuwhof.
